The scoreline got away from Norwich in the latter stages with some soft tries, as they tired from their efforts, tackling a much bigger and more physical side. Their defensive efforts for the most part were much better than of late against a promotion contender.
It all started quite differently as they caught the hosts in a complacent mood and took a 12 point lead, even after missing a penalty, on 3 minutes. On 7 minutes, Norwich profited from a 50-22 and set up several phases, battering the line before Dave Micklethwaite found a gap and dived over.
The kick was missed.
Norwich failed to make touch from a penalty and Brentwood kicked it forward but also failed to make touch and Norwich ran it back at them through Eddie Montgomery and Danny Van Staden, who finished off the move scoring near the posts. The kick from Theo Elliott went over and Norwich had a surprising early lead.
This woke Brentwood up and from a penalty kick to the corner they used their big forwards to batter the Norwich line and created space on the right to go over.
On 20 minutes they scored again, playing accurate offloading rugby and patiently working the spaces, going over in the left corner.
The penalties started to mount for Norwich and from another in their 22, Brentwood forced their way over to take the lead, 17-12.
With Norwich on a warning and a pile up on their line, Micklethwaite was sent the bin, simultaneous to Danny Van Staden leaving the field with a worrying arm injury that turned out to be not quite as serious as feared.
The penalties kept coming allowing Brentwood to score in the right corner and convert to end the half 24-12.
With the advantage of the slope, the first try of the second half was a superb effort by the Brentwood 8 who hit the line at full pace after a line out on halfway and burst through to go clear through to score.
Norwich were not finished though and after a period of pressure, Micklethwaite got his second try, picking up and charging through a defensive hole in a ruck. Theo Elliott added the conversion.
Brentwood then started to find scoring much easier as Norwich tired from their defensive efforts.
Two tries were scored by Brentwood before Norwich lost Mitch Parker to injury and three tries more followed.
Norwich’s efforts deserved a bonus point but they came away empty handed again.
